Brave-Expedition

Brave the Wilderness and Expedition are week long Summer camps located in the Sam Houston State Forest where students are able to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ while experiencing His love in the midst of His creation. Brave the Wilderness and Expedition allow teens to meet members of other local parishes within our deanery while building lasting relationships with them and with Christ.

The cost for Brave/Expedition is $350. The initial payment will be a $100 deposit. Scholarships are available so do not let money be an issue.

Brave takes place at Forest Glen Camp, which is hidden in the Sam Houston National Forest in Huntsville, TX.

For the first time ever, our two camps (Expedition and Brave the Wilderness) will be held together. All kids finishing grades 6-8 will attend the Expedition portion of the retreat and all teens in high school will attend the Brave the Wilderness portion. Children are welcome to invite friends as long as they meet the age requirements.

Adults may join us as chaperones as well! Please complete the adult registration form at the link above and you will be instructed to complete the brief safety training prior to the event.

Yes and no. Brave and Expedition will be sharing the same camp so they will see each other throughout the day especially for shared worship services like Mass and adoration, but most activities including talks, games, and meals will be done separately.

Clothing to Pack

• 8-10 changes of clothes will be needed due to messy games and lots of activities.  Everyone will be given time to shower and change up to three times a day.
• 1-2 pairs of swimsuits
  • One-piece suits for girls or trunks AND swim shirts for guys…no bikinis or speedos
• 1-2 “swim shirts” (a.k.a. rash guard)  For the guys to swim.  These should not be made of cotton.
• 2 pairs of closed-toed athletic shoes
• 1 pair of flip-flops for showers
• 2-3 Towels for swimming and showering
• 1 pair of nice jeans for Mass
• T-Shirts and shorts are appropriate for all the daytime activities, but please remember to dress MODESTLY.  In order to help all participants focus on JESUS at camp, we will strictly enforce this dress code.
  • What NOT to wear:  Tank tops, Cut-off sleeves, tight-fitting athletic shirts, spaghetti straps or open mid-riffs.  (This is for both guys and girls) These items may only be worn UNDERNEATH a much more modest layer of clothing. 
  • Girls’ “Nike shorts” must have a minimum of 5” inseam.  Do NOT roll the tops or bottoms!!!

• Toiletries (Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush etc.)
• Sport Bottle for water (must put name on it with permanent marker)
• Sunscreen
• Insect Repellant
• Pillow
• Flashlight with fresh batteries
• Sleeping Bag or Sheets/Blanket (Bare twin-size mattresses provided)
• Bible, Rosary, Prayer Books, Journal, etc.
• Camera (Cell phones are allowed, but may get lost/broken/soaked)
• Fishing Tackle (Optional)
• Yoga Mat (Optional)
• Poncho/Umbrella (Optional)
• Favorite Snack Food – Enough to share with about 10 people

We have NEVER turned a teen away because they couldn't afford a camp. Please don't be shy about asking if your teen needs a scholarship.

Recreational Activities Include: High and low ropes courses, zip lines, rock climbing, team building, messy games, canoeing, team sports such as soccer, gaga ball, volleyball, etc., swimming, small group compeitions and much more!

Spiritual Activities Include: Mass, Confession, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, prayer services, inspirational talks, praise and worship, and much more!
